We meet up with Mohamed Sarr, IT manager of the Radisson Blu Hotel, who is responsible for seizing IT-opportunities and constantly keeps an eye on innovations.
Choosing our partner
‘We have the full arsenal of solutions from Van Hessen’, Mohamed states. ‘There are many property management solutions but it’s well known that OPERA is one of the best PMS systems in the world. Working with Van Hessen was an easy decision from the start. We’ve heard so many positive things about Van Hessen and no other provider helps us to cover all our needs this way. Actually, what Van Hessen delivered even exceeded our expectations.
Oracle Hospitality OPERA PMS is very extensive but still user-friendly. We are using up to 70% of the features and are still discovering options. We have a great collaboration with Van Hessen and the team is very helpful. Mostly I’m in contact with the management. They’re open minded, easy to talk to and listen to our needs. They see our problem as their problem and take things seriously. Van Hessen is not just a provider, but we consider them as our partner.
When we internally discussed the possibility of a system change, our team surprised me. They love to work with OPERA as it’s easy to use. The system solves most of our issues and we never experienced any big downtime with Van Hessen. Not even when we had a computer virus and needed to reinstall everything. So, our team was not keen on changing PMS and we stayed with Van Hessen.’
Installation of Oracle MICROS Simphony POS
‘Recently Oracle MICROS Simphony POS was installed and it went very well. Implementing a new system can be a bit stressful but when Van Hessen’s experts, Hans Elliott – Technology Product Manager F&B and Alphonse Tine – Customer Service Engineer POS, came to install Simphony it went very smooth. They operate as true professionals, are very involved and solve issues on the spot.
We used to work with a cashier for registering orders and with the introduction of Simphony we had to change our procedures and professionalize F&B operations. For our F&B team it meant a new way of working. Our waiters are now in charge of the guest service and satisfaction. Using tablets makes it easier to set incentives for pushing sales of which they benefit. They take ownership and it’s very motivating having a bit of healthy competition. We see our revenue growing and most important, our guests notice the improvements too. The service is getting better by the day and our Tripadvisor reviews are very positive. So, the training and installation was a success. At the end it was exactly what we expected. And more! Everybody was surprised in a positive way. Switching to Simphony was a good move.’

‘To achieve our ambitions, we need to keep improving on all levels and domains. Having our systems flawlessly integrated gives us a huge advantage. We have all information at our disposal. For instance, keeping a close eye on occupancy levels, costs and cash flow is essential.
For managing the flow of goods and procurement, we have Van Hessen’s Materials Control software integrated with Simphony POS. It gives us a real-time overview on cost of sales and stocking requirements. The hospitality suite of OPERA PMS and Simphony POS incorporates both systems. It works perfectly and empowers our staff. So, they are able to deliver the ultimate hotel experience for our guests. To manage our conference department, we use OPERA Sales & Catering which is an extension of OPERA PMS, effectively built in one system.’
