Located in the heart of vibrant Amsterdam this 4* boutique design hotel is characterized by its playful elegance, warm atmosphere and stylish design. At the Senses restaurant, you can enjoy a creative, culinary experience that awakens your senses. The hotel is part of the Albus group and is family run since 2002.
Patty van der Meer, family member and Sales & Marketing Manager of the Albus Hotel, tells us about their love for innovation, creation and design. The Van der Meer family likes to be ahead of the game and takes corporate social responsibility seriously. Thus, in 2017, after an extensive and complex renovation, The Albus Hotel became the first carbon-free hotel in Europe to operate from an existing building.
Pilot location voor OPERA Cloud PMS
The Albus Hotel was one of the pilot hotels of Van Hessen for the installation of OPERA Cloud. ‘We’ve been working with Van Hessen for a long time and when they approached us to be a test and pilot hotel for OPERA Cloud, it was right up our alley. We always look for new opportunities and possibilities. It’s important for us to work smart and constantly improve our guest services. With the arrival of OPERA Cloud, we took our chance to check some things off our wish list,’ Patty explains.
Van Hessen rolled out the very first version of OPERA Cloud at The Albus Hotel. ‘Looking back, we both learned a lot’, Patty says. ‘It makes perfect sense to test a system in a pilot environment. After all, you may run into things you don’t foresee. This can then be adjusted and resolved in subsequent versions.’
‘There are many advantages in switching to OPERA Cloud. For example, the check-in process is faster and simplified, housekeeping can change room status instantly by mobile phone and communication with our technical service runs smooth. Working in the cloud is a major advantage. Some of us work from different locations and have the freedom to handle things on the go. Another benefit is changing the roles of employees in the system. This way everybody gets the data that matches their position and we have a clear overview. Employees have a personal email address in OPERA Cloud. So, they can reset their own account when they forget their password,’ Patty says with a smile.
‘OPERA Cloud seamlessly integrates with the other systems we use. This way we speed up the entire process, which is especially appreciated by our business guests. Through FastID, complete check-in is done automatically via mobile phone, including opening the room door. In housekeeping, they work with the app RoomChecking and in marketing, we use Experience to build in multiple touch points during the customer journey and drive additional sales.’
The current version of OPERA Cloud, which is rolled out now, has more options than the pilot version used by The Albus Hotel. ‘We’ll have an update to the latest version of OPERA Cloud this year’, Patty states. ‘Then we can create custom reports with the Reporting & Analytics functionality as well.’

A bright future ahead
The future of The Albus Hotel is bright as there is plenty to look forward to. ‘In order to improve the experience of our guests we are currently renovating our lobby. Here we focus on seated check-in with tablet’, Patty explains. ‘We’ll have a new space for meetings and private dining, our bar will be completely renovated and next winter our hotel rooms get a whole new look. An exciting time to look forward to.
We’re proud to be a family business. Every one of us has a specific field of expertise. But we’re all involved in everything that happens in our company. Our family ties are close, we have a mutual trust and are able to work together very well. In fact, we absolutely enjoy each other’s company and talk to one and other on a daily base. We have such a relationship of trust with Van Hessen as well. We can always turn to them.’
